How Your Age Is Calculated
Your age is the number of complete years that have passed between your date of birth and today. The moment you are born you are 0 years old, and you gain one year on each birthday. This calculator goes a step further and breaks your age down into years, months, and days, counts the days until your next birthday, and tells you the total number of days you have been alive.
Years, months, and days
Because months have different lengths, simply subtracting dates is not enough. We compare the day and month of your birth with today's date and carry over days from the previous month when needed, so the result is always exact.
Countdown to your next birthday
We find the next time your birth month and day occur on the calendar and count the days remaining. If today is your birthday, you'll get a little celebration instead.
π‘ Tip: leap-year babies (born February 29) only have a "real" birthday once every four years β but this calculator still counts your age correctly every year.
Estimated U.S. School Grade
In the United States, the school year typically begins in late August or September. Most children start kindergarten in the fall of the year they turn 5, with a common cutoff date of September 1. From there, each grade lines up with a one-year age increase.
| Typical age | Grade level |
| 3β4 | Preschool / Pre-K |
| 5 | Kindergarten |
| 6β11 | Elementary (Grades 1β5) |
| 11β13 | Middle School (Grades 6β8) |
| 14β18 | High School (Grades 9β12) |
| 18+ | College / Adult |
β» Kindergarten cutoff dates vary by state (ranging from August to January). Children who are red-shirted, who skip a grade, or who repeat one may differ from the estimate, so the grade shown is approximate.
Beyond school: your life stage
Once you're past school age, the calculator switches to a life stage based on your age. Instead of corporate job titles, these stages follow the milestones most Americans actually move through β coming of age, launching a career, putting down roots, raising a family, the empty nest, and retirement β along with helpful milestone badges.
| Age | Life stage | Typical U.S. milestones |
| 18β20 | New adult | Voting age; college, trade school, or first job |
| 21β24 | Coming of age | Turning 21; college graduation; first real paycheck |
| 25β29 | Building independence | Career growth, student loans, building credit; off parents' health plan at 26 |
| 30β34 | Putting down roots | Marriage, first home, growing a 401(k) |
| 35β44 | Prime family & career years | Raising kids, paying the mortgage, advancing at work |
| 45β54 | Peak years & sandwich generation | Top earnings; kids to college and aging parents; AARP & catch-up savings at 50 |
| 55β61 | Empty nest & pre-retirement | Downsizing; ramping up retirement savings |
| 62β64 | Early retirement window | Early Social Security available at 62 |
| 65β66 | Retirement transition | Medicare eligibility begins at 65 |
| 67β74 | Active retirement | Full retirement age; travel and grandkids |
| 75+ | Golden years | Enjoying a lifetime of experience |
β» Life stages are a simplified, just-for-fun guide and vary widely from person to person. Milestone ages reflect general U.S. guidelines (Social Security, Medicare, retirement-account rules, etc.) and may change with law and policy.
